Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett broke the NFL single season sack record by recording his 23rd during Sunday's (January 4) game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Garrett, 30, sacked Bengals quarterback on a 1st & 10 passing play with 5:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. The sack broke the record of 22.5 sacks initially set by Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan in 2001 and matched by Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt in 2021.

Garrett has now sacked Burrow 12 times, which is the most he's recorded against any NFL quarterback, surpassing a tie with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, having played both players twice annually barring injuries throughout their careers on their respective AFC North Division rival teams. Garrett had also sacked Burrow to record his 100th career sack during their Week 16 matchup in 2024.

Garrett and the Browns reached a record-setting contract extension in March, weeks after he publicly requested a trade, which included $123.5 million in guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $40 million, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at the time. The former Texas A&M standout was selected by the Browns at No. 1 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft and has gone on to be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL during his first eight seasons.

Garrett, a four-time First-team All-Pro, a two-time Second-team All-Pro, a six-time Pro Bowler, and the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has recorded double-digit sacks during each of the last seven seasons, having already recorded a career-best 18 sacks through 11 games of the 2025 NFL season.
