Were You a Victim of the Zelle Scams? Here's What You Should Do

Scamming has reached an all time high, especially on the money app Zelle. Last year alone, millions of dollars were lost. I have heard horror stories of people being tricked into sending imposters hundreds of dollars. Facebook marketplace is one of the most common places where this happens. And anyone can fall victim to it.

Has this happened to you? It almost happened to me. I was trying to sell a piece of furniture and was sent a fake check in the mail. Luckily, I caught wind of what was going on before I deposited it into my bank account. I was also almost finessed on Facebook marketplace and almost sent money to a "seller" who didn't even live in my state!

If this has happened to you, you are not alone. Unfortunately, it happens every single day all over the world. Here is what you can do, according Aura.

  1. File a fraud claim with your financial institution under Regulation E
  2. Ask the recipient for a refund
  3. Try to cancel the payment
  4. Contact Zelle support and get them involved
  5. File a police report
  6. Inform your bank or credit card company of the fraud
  7. Report and block the Zelle scammer
  8. Freeze your credit
  9. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
  10. Consider signing up for a digital security solution
